MHW & Iceborne โ€” 1500 Hours in Crown Trophy Hell: Mini & Big Crown Complete Record

Monster Hunter

๐ŸŽฎ Intro: Crown Trophies โ€” The True Definition of Endgame Grind

Hey hunters! I’m the admin who spent roughly 1500 hours hunting in Monster Hunter World and its expansion Iceborne โ€” and finally walked away with the platinum.

But here’s the thing: it wasn’t “1500 hours of chores.” It was “I loved hunting so much that 1500 hours just… happened.” Big difference, ngl.

In this post I’m looking back at the 4 Crown Trophies that almost broke me โ€” based entirely on my own lived experience. If you’re on this grind right now, strap in.

๐Ÿ† The Crown Trophy Quartet โ€” Overview

  • Miniature Crown Master (MHW) โ€” Register a minimum size gold crown for nearly all monsters
  • Giant Crown Master (MHW) โ€” Register a maximum size gold crown for nearly all monsters
  • True Miniature Crown Collector (Iceborne) โ€” Record all mini gold crowns for Iceborne’s added monsters
  • True Giant Crown Collector (Iceborne) โ€” Record all giant gold crowns for Iceborne’s added monsters

Note: Targets are size-variable monsters registered in the hunting records. Fixed-size monsters like Zorah Magdaros, Behemoth, and Leshen are excluded.

Difficulty: โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜… (max even by gut feeling)

  • Crown spawns are essentially RNG โ€” extremely luck-dependent
  • Some monsters have limited spawn windows to begin with
  • MHW base game and Iceborne track different monsters โ€” 60+ total targets across both

๐Ÿ˜ต Why Does This Grind Hit So Different?

โ— “There’s No End in Sight”

Hunt one monster โ€” size is juuust barely off. Hunt ten more โ€” still no crown. Then your brain starts spiraling: “Wait, can this quest even drop crowns…?” The paranoia is real and it hits every. single. day.

โ— Event Quests Are on Their Own Schedule

Some event quests have fixed sizes or boosted crown rates โ€” but they’re not always available. Miss the window and you’re back to the RNG hellhole of standard investigation quests. It’s a cheese strat that only works when the game lets you use it.

โ— You Can’t Tell If It’s a Crown Until It’s Over

Size judging by eye is basically impossible. You spend the whole hunt in suspense โ€” “Was that actually big enough?” โ€” only to find out after the end screen that nope, not a crown. The doubt never fully goes away.

๐Ÿงฐ Crown Hunting Guide โ€” How to Actually Make Progress

โ‘  Prioritize Event Quests Above Everything

  • MHW base: USJ-type quests and “Deep Blues” have higher crown rates
  • Iceborne: Seasonal festival events like “Great Appreciation Fest” boost crown spawn chances
  • These are limited-time โ€” when they’re live, drop everything and grind them

โ‘ก Optimize Your Investigation Quests

  • Aim for quests with more silver/gold reward slots (better loot density)
  • Fewer target monsters (1-2) means size distribution is less diluted
  • Short time limit + small roster = faster crown-per-hour rate

โ‘ข Never Judge By Sight Alone

  • Hunt it regardless โ€” the size record only locks in after quest completion
  • Exception: if it’s obviously tiny or massive, a quick size check mid-hunt can save time on obviously standard-sized runs

โ‘ฃ Manage Region Levels (Iceborne โ€” Guiding Lands)

  • Rare monster spawns in the Guiding Lands require specific region level setups
  • Especially critical for hard-to-encounter monsters like Yian Garuga and Tigrex Subspecies โ€” limited spawn conditions make these extra annoying

๐Ÿง  Common Mistakes & Traps to Avoid

  • Some monsters are size-fixed (Zorah Magdaros, Behemoth, etc.) โ€” they’re crown-exempt, don’t waste time on them
  • Crowns only register at quest end โ€” the size record appears in your Hunting Log AFTER the results screen. Mid-quest size checks are preliminary only
  • Old event quests need to be re-farmed when they return โ€” if a boosted-rate event is live right now, do it immediately. No procrastinating.

๐Ÿ Looking Back โ€” Was the Crown Grind Worth It?

Honestly, no other trophy has tested my patience like this. The grind goes brrrr for hundreds of hours with no guaranteed endpoint.

But at the same time โ€” chasing crowns forced me to hunt monsters I’d normally skip. And I kept finding myself thinking, “Wait, this monster is actually really fun?” That was a genuine surprise.

When it was all done, I didn’t look back and think “that was pure suffering.” The feeling of having truly played it all โ€” that’s a feeling I’m genuinely proud of.

The moment all medals hit 100% โ€” the GOAT achievement unlocked

๐Ÿ˜“ Top 5 Most Stressful Moments of the Crown Grind

  1. Farming the same monster endlessly with zero guarantee it’ll crown
  2. No way to confirm size mid-hunt โ€” the suspense kills you
  3. The preparation overhead: investigation management, Guiding Lands level juggling
  4. Waiting on event quests with boosted rates โ€” entirely out of your hands
  5. “Just one monster left!!” … and it takes another 20 hours

๐Ÿงพ Final Words

I didn’t play for 1500 hours just for trophies. But without these crown trophies pushing me forward, I wouldn’t have gone this deep into this world. That’s just the truth.

To every hunter out there going for the full crown set: this isn’t a challenge you overcome with luck. It’s one you conquer with patience and genuine love for the hunt.

Treat it as the ultimate capstone of your hunting life. Enjoy the journey. You’ve got this. ๐Ÿ†

๐ŸŽฎ Must-Have Gear: How I Saved on a PS5 Controller

During my hardcore Platinum Trophy grinds, the rubber on my PS5 thumbsticks finally tore off. I was dreading spending another $70 on a brand new DualSense… but then I tried these thumbstick caps as a last resort.

Surprisingly, they fit perfectly right over the torn rubber! I saved the replacement cost and used that money to buy another new game instead (lol).

If your thumbsticks are starting to peel or fall apart, I highly recommend this cheap fix to extend your controller’s life before you buy a new one!
